Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants head into their IPL 2026 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium with both sides struggling to stay in the playoff race. Positioned ninth and tenth on the points table respectively, their chances of reaching the top four are slipping, though mathematical possibilities still remain.
Lucknow Super Giants retain a theoretical path to qualification, but Mumbai Indians, with just two wins from nine matches, are in a far more precarious situation. Even if they win all remaining games, they can only reach 14 points, while teams typically require at least 16 to secure a playoff berth.
Despite the difficult position, Mumbai Indians have not conceded defeat. “No, I think it’s too early for me to say anything. I think we’ve still got five more games. I mean, anything can happen for us. We just need to finish the tournament positively and see what happens. There’s still a lot more cricket to be played, and I don’t think we are mathematically out of the tournament. So I’m going to fight, and I’m sure the rest of the boys will do the same,” coach Mahela Jayawardene said after the defeat versus CSK on Saturday night.
MI Struggle for Consistency
Mumbai Indians’ campaign has been marked by inconsistency, reflected in their use of 23 players across nine matches. The frequent changes underline issues with team balance, selection clarity, and form among key players.
One of the major concerns has been Suryakumar Yadav’s form. After finishing second in the batting charts last season, he currently sits 40th with 183 runs at an average of 20.33 and a strike rate of 144.
Jayawardene, however, backed the batter to turn things around. “I think he’s definitely up for it. I think he’s in a good space. It’s just that it hasn’t worked – the number of times he’s got caught on the boundary this season. Some of those shots are his shots, like even in the last game or the one before that -the flick where he got caught. So it’s just a matter of time. I think he himself is disappointed, but he just has to keep working harder.”
LSG Search for Momentum
Lucknow Super Giants have also endured a challenging season. In a tournament dominated by high-scoring batters, their top contributors Mitchell Marsh (212 runs) and Aiden Markram (193 runs) have not matched the output of the leading players in the Orange Cap race.
Their expensive signings, Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran, have also struggled, averaging 27 and 10 respectively. The batting unit has been inconsistent, raising questions about its structure moving forward.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel. For us, we have no other option. Every game is a knockout from here. It’s about how we perform and how we focus on the things,” bowling coach Bharat Arun said ahead of the match.

All players, except Matthew Breetzke, are available for selection. Josh Inglis has joined the squad in Mumbai ahead of the match.
Tactical Outlook
Mumbai may rely on Jasprit Bumrah’s versatility and AM Ghazanfar’s success in the powerplay, where he has taken five wickets this season.
Lucknow’s seam attack, featuring Mohsin Khan, Prince Yadav, and Mohammed Shami, has been effective in the powerplay, with Yadav leading the team’s wicket charts with 13 wickets.
With both teams running out of opportunities, the contest at Wankhede shapes up as a must-win encounter for both sides.
