The Bangladesh government has named former national captain Tamim Iqbal as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following the dissolution of the board of directors led by Aminul Islam on Tuesday.
The move comes after a five-member investigation committee reviewed allegations related to the BCB elections held in October last year and submitted its findings to the authorities.
At 37, Tamim becomes the youngest president in the board’s history. He will head an 11-member ad-hoc committee that includes former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and ex-international cricketer and commentator Athar Ali Khan.
Other members of the committee are Rashna Imam, Mirza Yeasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Tanjil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam and Fahim Sinha.
Government Acts on Investigation Findings
The investigation committee presented its conclusions during a press briefing at the Ministry of Sports, outlining concerns regarding the conduct of the BCB election process.
Speaking on behalf of the National Sports Council, sports director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan explained the decision to dissolve the board.
“As part of the National Sports Council’s responsibility, we have informed the ICC that this board of directors was not formed in a proper manner, and is not able to complete its work in a proper manner,” Mohammed Aminul Ahesan said.
“We have informed the ICC our decision to dissolve this board of directors. The NSC plays an important role for Bangladesh cricket or any sport in Bangladesh and on behalf of the government. Therefore, we are optimistic about the BCB and we think that the ICC will definitely uphold this decision,” he added.
Aminul Islam had earlier indicated his intention to remain in charge despite ongoing internal issues and the submission of the investigation report.
Mounting Pressure on Previous Board
The BCB had been under increasing scrutiny from the sports ministry, which questioned the legitimacy of the previous election process. Additional concerns included the national team’s absence from the recent T20 World Cup and allegations of political interference and favouritism within the board.
Four directors resigned last week, taking the total number of resignations since January to six, further intensifying the situation.
Tamim Steps Into Leadership Role
Tamim Iqbal is widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s leading cricketers, having played 391 international matches across formats, including 387 appearances for the national team.
As captain, he led Bangladesh to 21 wins in 38 matches, including a 2-1 ODI series victory over South Africa in 2022. After retiring from international cricket in early 2025, he continued playing domestically.
However, a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match later that year brought an end to his playing career. He subsequently became a councillor of a Dhaka-based cricket club and announced his intention to contest a BCB director position in the 2025 elections.
Tamim later withdrew his candidacy, citing alleged abuse of power in the election process under the previous administration.
