The IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens ended without a result after persistent rain forced the match to be abandoned.

Under overcast conditions, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane chose to bat first, even as the side took the field without Sunil Narine (illness) and Varun Chakaravarthy (injury) for the first time since 2020. The decision quickly proved costly, with KKR slipping to 16 for 2 inside the opening two overs.

Xavier Bartlett made full use of the swing on offer, dismissing Finn Allen and Cameron Green within three deliveries to put KKR under immediate pressure.

Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, appeared firmly in control as KKR struggled early in their innings. However, their momentum was cut short when rain arrived at Eden Gardens, halting play just as the visitors had the upper hand.

Rain Ends Contest Early

Weather forecasts had already indicated possible interruptions, and those predictions materialised as rain intensified steadily. Ground staff covered the field while players were forced off, with no opportunity for play to resume.

The interruption came at 7:47 PM local time, and although there were brief pauses in the rain that raised hopes of a restart, the conditions never improved enough to allow even a shortened five-over contest. Spectators began leaving the stadium around 10 PM, and after an extended delay, match officials officially called off the game at 11 PM.

At the time of stoppage, KKR were 25 for 2 in 3.4 overs, and play did not resume thereafter.

Brief scores:
Kolkata Knight Riders 25/2 in 3.4 overs (Xavier Bartlett 2-9)

Points Shared After Washout

With the match abandoned, both teams were awarded one point each. Punjab Kings, who had been in a strong position before the interruption, moved to the top of the IPL 2026 points table with five points, overtaking Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

For KKR, the result brought their first point of the campaign, placing them eighth in the standings. Only Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings remain below them on the table.

While PBKS may feel unfortunate given their early dominance, KKR will take some consolation from securing a point after a difficult start to the match.
