A composed half-century from Zubayr Hamza guided the DP World Lions to a total of 265/5 in their CSA One-Day Cup fixture against the Moothee Ram Tuskers at Pietermaritzburg Oval on Wednesday. Chasing the target, the Tuskers require 266 runs for victory.

Hamza anchored the innings with a patient 75 off 97 deliveries, marking his 15th half-century in List A cricket. He reached the landmark after facing 53 balls.

The opener entered the match in strong form, having registered two unbeaten centuries in four games earlier in the competition. However, he was unable to extend that sequence, eventually falling after attempting to scoop a delivery from Malcolm Nofal, only to offer a simple catch to Cameron Shekleton at cover.

Hamza laid the foundation for the Lions with a steady 48-run opening partnership alongside Reeza Hendricks, who contributed 22. The pair ensured the visitors progressed through the powerplay without losing a wicket. Hendricks, though, was unable to build on his start.

A further 98-run stand for the second wicket between Hamza and Rassie van der Dussen strengthened the Lions’ position. Van der Dussen, who scored 49, looked set for another half-century before edging a half-volley from Andile Mogakane behind to wicketkeeper Ntando Zuma while attempting an attacking shot.

The Tuskers maintained disciplined bowling throughout and struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Hamza in the 32nd over and Van der Dussen three overs later. The Lions found it difficult to accelerate during the closing phase of the innings, but Delano Potgieter’s late cameo provided a timely boost. He remained unbeaten on 29 from 19 balls, helping his side move past the 260-run mark.

Malcolm Nofal was the standout bowler for the Tuskers, claiming two wickets for 31 runs from seven overs. Hardus Viljoen also picked up two scalps, conceding 52 runs from his nine overs at an economy rate of 5.78, while Nofal maintained a tighter economy of 4.43.
