Record-breaking Ranji champions Mumbai have received a double boost ahead of their high-stakes quarterfinal clash against Karnataka. The squad welcomes back star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and all-rounder Shardul Thakur, both of whom have been sidelined recently due to health and injury concerns.
The match is set to take place at the MCA-BKC Ground in Mumbai from February 6 to 10, after the league stage concluded with Mumbai topping Elite Group D.
Return of the Big Guns
The inclusion of Jaiswal and Thakur significantly strengthens a Mumbai side aiming for its 43rd title. Their return comes at a critical juncture in the 2025-26 domestic calendar:
- Yashasvi Jaiswal: Currently India’s highest-ranked Test batter, Jaiswal returns after a period of absence that saw him hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis late last year. Despite his red-ball prowess, Jaiswal was notably omitted from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, making his presence in the Ranji knockouts a major subplot for the domestic season.
- Shardul Thakur: Thakur resumes his role as captain after recovering from a calf injury sustained in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in early January. He takes over the leadership from stand-in skipper Siddhesh Lad, who led the team during the final group-stage fixtures.
Key Omissions and Squad Depth
While the return of Jaiswal is a headline-grabber, the squad also features some notable absences and regular domestic performers:
- Ajinkya Rahane: The veteran and former captain is missing from the quarterfinal roster. Rahane, who stepped down from the captaincy before the season began, has struggled for form this year, averaging just over 34 across six innings.
- Sarfaraz Khan: Despite being named in early probables, reports indicate Sarfaraz may miss the fixture due to a hamstring injury sustained during the final group match against Delhi.
- Performance Leaders: The squad still boasts Siddhesh Lad, who has been in scintillating form with five centuries this season, and young talent Musheer Khan.
