Bangladesh defeated Australia by 86 runs via the DLS method in the opening ODI at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The victory marked only Bangladesh’s second ODI win over Australia and their first since the famous Cardiff triumph in June 2005.

Unlike that upset 21 years ago, this result was built on complete control as Bangladesh outplayed Australia in all departments. Nahid Rana starred with the ball, while returning all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain delivered a match-winning performance with both bat and ball.

Mosaddek Marks Return with Career-Best Knock

Playing his first ODI after four years away from the side, Mosaddek Hossain played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s total of 284/8.

The all-rounder remained unbeaten on a career-best 86 from 70 deliveries, striking seven fours and three sixes. His innings helped rescue Bangladesh after they had slipped to 140/4.

Mosaddek shared a crucial 75-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Towhid Hridoy, who contributed 31. The stand rebuilt the innings before Mosaddek continued to accelerate alongside the lower order.

Earlier, Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto laid the foundation with a 96-run partnership for the second wicket after Saif Hassan fell in the second over.

Shanto was particularly aggressive early in his innings, while Tanzid found success through conventional strokeplay. However, neither batter converted their starts into a bigger score. Tanzid was caught at mid-on, while Shanto departed nine overs later after scoring 67.

Litton Das also fell cheaply for 7 after Matt Renshaw produced an excellent caught-and-bowled effort.

Mosaddek survived dropped chances on 21, 38 and 73 before finishing strongly. Taskin Ahmed provided late support with a six and two boundaries as Bangladesh pushed their total to 284/8.

Rana Leads Destructive Bowling Display

Australia’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Taskin Ahmed bowled Matt Short with the very first ball of the innings.

The wicket made Short only the fifth opener to be dismissed first ball in an ODI innings against Bangladesh and resulted in Australia registering a third consecutive scoreless opening stand.

Mustafizur Rahman then trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw in the next over, leaving Australia immediately under pressure.

Nahid Rana added to the collapse when he dismissed captain Josh Inglis, who edged behind to Litton Das. The young fast bowler celebrated passionately before continuing to trouble Australia’s batters with speeds consistently above 146kph.

Rana finished with outstanding figures of 4/41, regularly exceeding 150kph during his spell.

Australia Unable to Recover

Australia endured a difficult day in the field, dropping four catches before struggling with the bat.

Cooper Connolly made 35 from 50 balls before becoming one of Mosaddek’s two victims. The spinner trapped him lbw before later dismissing Matt Renshaw for 2.

Alex Carey offered resistance with 47 but fell to Rana when he was beaten for pace. The fast bowler also removed debutant Liam Scott and Xavier Bartlett in quick succession as Australia’s chase continued to unravel.

Cameron Green remained unbeaten on 52, but by then the result was effectively decided.

Mosaddek capped off a memorable return by taking a superb catch running back from mid-off to dismiss Nathan Ellis and complete an excellent all-round display.

Bangladesh Continue Strong Home Form

The victory highlighted Bangladesh’s growing strength at home and showcased the impact of two key performers.

Mosaddek’s unbeaten 86, two wickets, and outstanding fielding display earned him a memorable return to international cricket, while Rana’s pace and aggression overwhelmed Australia’s batting lineup.

Together, they powered Bangladesh to a commanding victory and a historic triumph over one of world cricket’s strongest teams.
