Chennai Super Kings have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre for the remainder of IPL 2026, following the youngster’s injury setback.
Mhatre Ruled Out After Hamstring Injury
Mhatre, who had been CSK’s leading run-scorer this season, was ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18.
The franchise confirmed that the 18-year-old will require a rehabilitation period of six to 12 weeks, effectively ending his campaign.
Madhwal Joins at Base Price
Madhwal, a right-arm fast bowler from Uttarakhand, has joined CSK for his base price of INR 30 lakh. Despite going unsold in the IPL 2026 auction, he had been involved with Mumbai Indians as a net bowler this season.
He has prior IPL experience, having played 17 matches and taken 23 wickets, including a standout 5/5 performance against Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2023 eliminator.
Career Trajectory and Recent Form
Madhwal rose to prominence in IPL 2023 with Mumbai Indians, picking up 14 wickets in eight matches. However, his performances dipped in subsequent seasons.
He managed five wickets in IPL 2024 and four wickets in IPL 2025 with Rajasthan Royals, leading to him going unsold in the 2026 auction.
Despite this, he remained in the IPL ecosystem, featuring in trials with Kolkata Knight Riders and continuing as a net bowler.
CSK Hit by Injury Crisis
Madhwal joins a CSK squad already struggling with multiple injury concerns:
- MS Dhoni has yet to feature due to a calf strain
- Nathan Ellis is ruled out for the season
- Khaleel Ahmed has been sidelined with a quadricep injury
- Spencer Johnson has only recently regained fitness
These setbacks have forced frequent changes in the playing XI.
Tough Season for CSK
It has been a challenging start to IPL 2026 for Chennai Super Kings, who currently sit eighth on the points table with just two wins from six matches.
The addition of Madhwal provides a much-needed boost to their pace department as they look to stabilize their campaign and push for a turnaround in the coming matches.
