Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 after sustaining a left hamstring injury during a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18.
The 18-year-old, who has been CSK’s leading run-scorer this season, is expected to undergo a rehabilitation period. The franchise confirmed the update via social media, stating: “Ayush’s injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks. We wish Ayush a speedy recovery.” CSK are yet to announce a replacement.
Injury During Crucial Knock
Mhatre was introduced as an Impact Player in the second over of CSK’s chase of 195, replacing fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh. He made an immediate impact, scoring a quick 30 off 12 balls.
However, while completing a second run on a call from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre clutched his left hamstring and showed visible discomfort. He received on-field treatment from the team physiotherapist before briefly continuing his innings.
Despite returning to bat, he struggled with movement, managing only a single before being dismissed on the next delivery.
Big Blow for CSK
CSK batting coach Mike Hussey acknowledged the significance of the setback, saying, “It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. And he’s going to be a big, big loss because he’s been in really nice touch for us.”
Mhatre had been in excellent form, scoring 201 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 177.87, making him the team’s standout performer with the bat this season.
Injury Concerns Mount for Chennai
CSK have been dealing with multiple injury issues throughout the campaign. MS Dhoni has yet to feature due to a calf strain, while Nathan Ellis was ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury. His replacement, Spencer Johnson, is still recovering and has not joined the squad.
Additionally, fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed was recently sidelined with a right quadricep injury.
With these setbacks, CSK’s squad depth has been tested early in the tournament. The five-time champions currently sit eighth on the points table, having secured two wins and suffered four defeats in their first six matches.
