As India prepare to take on Afghanistan in a one-off Test beginning on June 6 in New Chandigarh, memories of their first-ever Test meeting in 2018 continue to resonate – not for the result, but for a moment of sportsmanship that left a lasting impact.

Afghanistan made their historic Test debut against India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in June 2018, becoming the 12th Full Member nation of the ICC. India dominated the match, securing victory by an innings and 262 runs within two days. However, what followed after the game proved far more memorable than the result itself.

Rahane Invites Afghanistan to Share the Moment

At the end of the presentation ceremony, stand-in India captain Ajinkya Rahane invited Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan and his teammates to join India in the victory photograph.

Rather than celebrating alone, the Indian team chose to share the occasion with their opponents, recognising the significance of Afghanistan’s entry into Test cricket. This highlighted respect for the journey Afghanistan had taken to reach the format.

Global Praise for a Heartfelt Moment

The act of sportsmanship was widely appreciated across the cricketing world. Former England captain Kevin Pietersen reacted on X, writing: “Wonderful sportsmanship! Bravo!”

Rahane also acknowledged Afghanistan’s effort during the presentation, saying: “We did not take Afghanistan lightly… Credit to Afghanistan. Their seamers bowled really well, especially in the third session and I am sure they will go a long way.”

A Milestone Beyond the Scorecard

For Afghanistan, the match represented the culmination of years of progress and perseverance. While the result went in India’s favour, the occasion itself marked a significant step forward for Afghan cricket.

India’s gesture recognised that achievement and reflected the spirit of the game beyond competition. It was a reminder of the values that have long been associated with cricket.

Dhawan’s Words of Encouragement

Player of the Match Shikhar Dhawan also extended his support to the visiting side, saying: “I want to congratulate Afghanistan for making it to this level and Eid Mubarak to all of them. It’s always a learning process. Once they play other sides and start winning, they will get confidence. It’s a big boost for their country. I would like to thank the audience for all coming here.”

A Lasting Reminder

Years later, the moment remains a powerful example of how cricket goes beyond wins and losses. While records and results are remembered, gestures like these often leave a deeper and more enduring legacy.
