Dunkley Seizes Her Opportunity on Return
England maintained their perfect start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a convincing 38-run victory over Scotland at Headingley, Leeds. Sophia Dunkley marked her return to the side with a brilliant half-century before Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson produced a stunning late assault to lift England to a match-winning total.
Playing her first match of the tournament after replacing the injured Nat Sciver-Brunt, Dunkley made an immediate impact with a superb 57 from 37 balls. Her innings came at a crucial moment after Scotland struck with the first ball of the match.
Former England spinner Kirstie Gordon, now representing Scotland, removed Amy Jones for a duck with the opening delivery. Scotland nearly had another breakthrough shortly afterward, but Priyanaz Chatterji spilled a difficult chance that offered Dunkley an early reprieve.
The England batter made Scotland pay. She quickly found her rhythm, striking boundaries all around the ground and reaching her fifty from just 33 deliveries. Dunkley dominated the powerplay and helped England recover strongly after the early setback.
Scotland Miss Opportunities in the Field
Scotland showed promise with the ball but struggled to maintain their discipline in the field. Gordon continued her impressive spell by dismissing Danni Wyatt-Hodge for 7 and finished with figures of 2 for 30.
Alice Capsey added valuable support with a brisk 40 from 25 balls, sharing an important partnership with Dunkley that kept England firmly in control. Scotland’s bowlers managed to pick up wickets through Hannah Rainey and Chatterji, but several missed opportunities allowed England to build momentum throughout the innings.
Kemp and Gibson Launch Explosive Finish
England were 139 for 5 during the 17th over when Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson joined forces. What followed completely changed the complexion of the innings.
The pair added an unbeaten 61 runs from just 21 balls, tearing into the Scottish attack during the closing overs. Kemp blasted 39 not out from only 16 deliveries, while Gibson smashed an unbeaten 30 from 11 balls.
Gibson’s innings included a spectacular 86-metre six into the second tier of the stands, while Kemp struck powerful boundaries down the ground and over the leg side. Their late acceleration helped England reach 200 for 5, one of the highest totals of the tournament.
Ecclestone Leads England’s Bowling Effort
Scotland began their chase positively, matching England’s scoring rate during the powerplay. Openers Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser played aggressively and gave their side hope of mounting a challenge.
However, Sophie Ecclestone quickly shifted the momentum. The left-arm spinner claimed her 150th T20I wicket when she bowled Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce and later dismissed Carter to leave Scotland under pressure.
Ecclestone finished with impressive figures of 2 for 23, while England’s supporting bowlers maintained control throughout the innings. Danielle Gibson and Freya Kemp combined for another key wicket when Megan McColl fell in the deep.
Scotland Fight but Fall Short
Wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce offered the strongest resistance for Scotland with a well-made 34 from 24 balls, including a stylish six over point. Pippa Sproul and Kirstie Gordon also contributed useful runs lower down the order.
Despite those efforts, Scotland struggled to keep pace with the required run rate. England’s bowlers consistently applied pressure and prevented any major partnerships from developing during the second half of the chase.
Scotland eventually finished on 162 for 7 from their 20 overs, falling 38 runs short of the target.
England Continue Perfect Start
The victory gives England a third consecutive win in the tournament and further strengthens their position in the race for the semi-finals. Dunkley’s timely return, combined with the finishing power of Kemp and Gibson, highlighted the depth within the England squad.
For Scotland, there were encouraging signs with both bat and ball, but costly fielding mistakes ultimately proved decisive against one of the tournament favourites. England now move forward with growing confidence as they continue their World Cup campaign unbeaten.
