Team India, led by captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, produced a dominant performance to defeat Afghanistan by a massive margin in the one-off Test match at Chandigarh.

The contest remained heavily one-sided across the three days, with Afghanistan unable to match India’s standards in the longest format. The visitors eventually suffered defeat after being asked to follow on.

The margin of victory created a new landmark in Indian cricket history and now stands among India’s biggest wins in Test cricket.

Biggest Test Wins for India by Innings

5. IND vs SL – Innings and 239 runs, 2017

During Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2017, the hosts posted a huge total of 610/6 in the second Test after the visitors had made 205 in their first innings. Virat Kohli struck a double century, while Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma also scored hundreds.

Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 166 in the third innings, handing India victory by an innings and 239 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin played a major role with the ball, claiming two four-wicket hauls in the match.

4. IND vs BAN – Innings and 239 runs, 2007

In 2007, India toured Bangladesh and dominated the second Test by putting up 610 runs in their first innings. Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar all scored centuries, while MS Dhoni added a half-century.

Bangladesh were dismissed for only 118 in the second innings after Zaheer Khan picked up a five-wicket haul. India enforced the follow-on and completed an innings-and-239-run win after bowling the hosts out for 253. Zaheer was named Player of the Match for his impressive spell.

3. IND vs AFG – Innings and 262 runs, 2018

Afghanistan played a historic one-off Test against India in 2018. Batting first, India scored 474, powered by centuries from Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan, along with half-centuries from KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya.

Afghanistan struggled badly with the bat and were bowled out for 109 in the second innings, with Ashwin taking four wickets. After India enforced the follow-on, the visitors were dismissed for 103 as Ravindra Jadeja claimed four wickets, giving India victory by an innings and 262 runs.

2. IND vs WI – Innings and 272 runs, 2019

West Indies toured India in 2019 for a Test series, and the first match at Rajkot saw India completely dominate. The hosts declared on 649/9 after putting the West Indies bowlers under sustained pressure.

The visitors were bowled out for 181 in reply, prompting India to enforce the follow-on. West Indies then collapsed again for 196 as India sealed a huge innings-and-272-run win.

India’s biggest Test win by runs came in 2026 during the one-off Test against Afghanistan at Chandigarh. Batting first, India declared on 564 after captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul scored centuries.

In Afghanistan’s first innings, debutant Manav Suthar produced a brilliant six-wicket haul to bowl the visitors out for 152. India enforced the follow-on, and Washington Sundar then took control with a four-wicket haul.

Afghanistan were bowled out for just 112 in their second innings, allowing India to complete a historic innings-and-300-run victory on the third day.
