Former England allrounder Andrew Flintoff is expected to be appointed as the new head coach of Sydney Thunder, marking his first franchise coaching role outside England. Flintoff is set to replace Trevor Bayliss, who parted ways with the club after five seasons in charge.
Thunder Look for Fresh Direction
Bayliss, who guided England to the 2019 ODI World Cup title, led Sydney Thunder to the BBL final in 2024-25. However, the team finished at the bottom of the table in both the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons, prompting a change in leadership.
Following his departure, Thunder general manager Trent Copeland had indicated the club would target a “world-class T20 coach,” with Flintoff emerging as the preferred candidate.
Flintoff’s Coaching Background
Flintoff has spent the past year working with England Lions, including overseeing their tour of Australia that ran alongside the Ashes. He also had a short stint with England’s white-ball teams as a consultant during Matthew Mott’s tenure.
His only franchise coaching experience to date has come with Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, where he was in charge during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The team finished fourth and third in those campaigns.
Flintoff will not return for the 2026 season after failing to reach an agreement with the franchise’s new owners, Sun Group, who have rebranded the side as Sunrisers Leeds.
Scheduling Challenges Ahead
England Lions are scheduled to tour South Africa in December for three one-day matches and two four-day games, a schedule that could overlap with the start of the BBL season.
Flintoff’s previous involvement in the Big Bash League includes a playing stint with Brisbane Heat during the 2014-15 season, where he featured in seven matches.
Key Decisions Await
One of Flintoff’s early decisions as coach is likely to involve the captaincy of David Warner, who was charged with drink driving in April. Warner is expected to plead guilty when the case returns to court on June 24.
Flintoff’s appointment would complete a series of recent coaching changes within Cricket New South Wales. James Hopes has already been named Sydney Sixers BBL coach, while Brad Haddin has taken over as the New South Wales state coach.
Additionally, Peter Forrest and Daniel Smith have been appointed as assistant coaches for the state side under Haddin, following their recent work in Sydney premier cricket.
