Punjab Kings continued their unbeaten run in IPL 2026 with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, successfully chasing 196 with 21 balls to spare.
Despite Quinton de Kock’s century on his return to the Mumbai Indians XI, it was the composed and aggressive partnership between Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer that defined the contest. Earlier, Arshdeep Singh set the tone with a disciplined bowling display as PBKS restricted MI to 195 for 6.
De Kock, Dhir lead MI recovery
An injury to Rohit Sharma brought de Kock into the XI, and he made an immediate impact, scoring 112 off 60 balls and becoming only the third batter to register centuries for three different IPL teams. Naman Dhir, promoted to No. 4, supported him with 50 off 31 deliveries, but the rest of the batting line-up struggled to contribute.
De Kock signalled intent early and, alongside Dhir, helped MI build momentum. From 97 for 2 in 10 overs, the scoring rate increased further, and at 125 for 2 in 12 overs, MI appeared set for a total beyond 200.
PBKS bowlers pull things back
Punjab’s bowlers responded effectively in the later stages. Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh delivered key overs with the ball reversing, while Shashank Singh’s variation once again proved effective, removing Dhir.
Hardik Pandya managed 14 off 12 before falling to a spectacular boundary catch effort involving Iyer, who completed the play with assistance from Xavier Bartlett.
Only 70 runs came in the final eight overs, leaving MI with 195 for 6 — a total that was considered slightly below par at the break.
Early wickets give MI brief hope
Punjab’s chase began aggressively, but Mumbai found early breakthroughs through Allah Ghazanfar, who removed Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly in the powerplay.
Jasprit Bumrah also created pressure with a tight spell, although he remained without a wicket.
Prabhsimran and Iyer take control
After the early setbacks, Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings and quickly turned the game in PBKS’ favour.
Prabhsimran, who had an early reprieve on 11, went on to score an unbeaten 80 off 39 balls, marking his first not-out contribution in a successful IPL chase. Iyer complemented him with 66 off 35 balls, registering his third consecutive half-century.
The pair maintained control throughout the middle overs, with Prabhsimran accelerating once the field spread. He reached his fifty in just 23 balls, while Iyer kept the pressure on with fluent strokeplay.
Any remaining doubts were removed when Iyer struck a six off Bumrah in the 13th over. Prabhsimran followed with a boundary and a six off Pandya, ensuring a swift finish as PBKS completed the chase comfortably.
