India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 not only marked a historic achievement for the team but also created a milestone for head coach Gautam Gambhir. With the triumph, Gambhir became the first Indian head coach to win two ICC trophies during his tenure.

India lifted their third T20 World Cup title after defeating New Zealand in the final, continuing a remarkable run in ICC tournaments under Gambhir’s guidance.

The win also saw multiple records broken. India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times, the first to claim back-to-back titles, and the first host nation to lift the trophy.

Champions Trophy 2025 Success

Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach did not begin smoothly. The team suffered significant series defeats against Sri Lanka in ODIs and against New Zealand and Australia in Tests.

However, India’s fortunes shifted during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The squad featured experienced players including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer.

India started the tournament strongly and progressed to the semifinals unbeaten. Key performances included Shubman Gill’s century against Bangladesh and Virat Kohli’s hundred against Pakistan.

In the semifinal, India faced Australia, the same team that had defeated them in the 2023 World Cup final. Australia posted 264 runs with half-centuries from Steve Smith and Alex Carey.

India successfully chased the target with 11 balls remaining, with Kohli scoring 84 off 98 deliveries to guide the team into the final against New Zealand.

In the final, India restricted New Zealand to 254 runs before completing the chase with six balls to spare. Rohit Sharma played a decisive role and was named Player of the Match as India secured the Champions Trophy title — Gambhir’s first ICC triumph as head coach.

T20 World Cup 2026 Triumph

India entered the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as the defending champions and tournament hosts. Despite some challenging selection decisions ahead of the competition, the squad performed strongly across the tournament.

India remained unbeaten during the group stage, which helped them progress to the Super Eight phase. The team faced difficulties after losing their first match in the round to South Africa by 76 runs, putting pressure on their remaining fixtures.

A victory against Zimbabwe kept India’s campaign alive before a crucial match against the West Indies, which effectively became a knockout encounter.

In that match, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson delivered a match-winning innings, helping India advance to the semifinals against England. For the third time in the tournament’s history, India and England met in a semifinal clash.

Samson once again played a key role as India defeated England in a close contest. England’s Jacob Bethell produced a strong performance, but India secured the win to set up a final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Batting first in the final, India scored 255/5. Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel led the bowling attack, sharing seven wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 159.

India’s victory secured the T20 World Cup 2026 title and marked Gautam Gambhir’s second ICC trophy as head coach.
