After edging England in a high-scoring semi-final, India are preparing to face New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026. However, developments around the playing surface at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad have drawn attention ahead of the title clash.
It has been reported that the pitch for the IND vs NZ final has been modified shortly before the match. India, coached by Gautam Gambhir, are expected to play on a mixed-soil surface for the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
India Management Raised Concerns Over Earlier Pitches
The 2026 T20 World Cup has produced several close contests, with teams such as India, South Africa, New Zealand and England performing strongly. At the same time, sides including Zimbabwe, the United States and Italy also impressed with their performances during the tournament.
Pitch conditions have played an important role throughout the competition, often providing a balanced contest between bat and ball.
According to a report by Express Sports, the Indian team management, led by Gautam Gambhir, had raised concerns about some of the surfaces used earlier in the tournament.
The issue reportedly stemmed from India’s struggles with the bat during matches against the United States and South Africa, where the batting line-up found it difficult to adapt to slower pitches. Following these concerns, the Indian management approached the BCCI, which subsequently asked its officials to speak with the local curators.
Mixed-Soil Surface Expected for the Final
With the BCCI’s involvement, the pitch for the IND vs NZ final is expected to differ from the one used earlier in Ahmedabad when India faced South Africa.
In that match, India were chasing a target of 188 but were bowled out for 111, suffering a 76-run defeat at the same venue. The surface used on that occasion was a black-soil pitch, which made scoring difficult as South Africa’s bowlers maintained control.
For the final, the pitch is expected to contain a higher proportion of red soil, creating a mixed-soil surface. The track is expected to resemble the one used during the South Africa vs Canada group-stage match, where South Africa’s batters scored heavily.
Such surfaces are generally considered more favourable for batting because red soil tends to provide consistent bounce and pace.
Ahmedabad’s World Cup Memories for India
The Narendra Modi Stadium has been the venue for two major defeats for India in World Cup competitions.
Although India registered a win against Pakistan in front of a large crowd, they lost to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final, where Travis Head played a decisive innings to help Pat Cummins’ side secure the title.
More recently, India suffered another setback at the same ground during the T20 World Cup 2026 when South Africa defeated them. Both of those matches were played on black-soil pitches.
The decision to use a mixed-soil pitch for the IND vs NZ final is believed to align with India’s approach for the match, as the hosts look to produce a strong performance in the tournament decider.
