India secured a dramatic seven-run victory over England in the T20 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, overcoming a brilliant century from Jacob Bethell to book their place in the final. In a contest dominated by aggressive batting and big totals, three key moments ultimately swung the momentum in India’s favour.
Bumrah’s Control in a High-Scoring Game
On a night when more than 500 runs were scored across 40 overs, Jasprit Bumrah’s spell proved crucial in shaping the outcome.
The Indian pacer returned figures of 1 for 33 from his four overs. With the scoring rate in the match soaring beyond 12 runs per over, Bumrah maintained remarkable control, conceding at just 8.25.
Bowling during the fifth, 11th, 16th and 18th overs of England’s chase, he blended pinpoint yorkers with well-disguised slower deliveries. His ability to disrupt the flow of runs repeatedly slowed England’s momentum during critical stages of the innings.
Axar Patel’s Impact in the Field
Although Axar Patel did not make a major contribution with bat or ball, his fielding produced two decisive moments.
The first came with the dismissal of England captain Harry Brook. Charging in quickly from extra cover, Axar covered the distance and dived forward to take an outstanding catch, sending Brook back for seven.
His second intervention was even more spectacular. With England gaining momentum during a rapid 77-run partnership from just 39 balls, Axar sprinted across from deep mid-wicket, collected the ball on the run and, while still airborne, flicked it back inside the boundary to Shivam Dube to complete a relay catch that removed Will Jacks.
Dube’s Counterattack Keeps India’s Momentum
When Sanju Samson was dismissed for 89, there was a brief moment when India’s scoring surge looked as though it might slow down. Shivam Dube, however, ensured the momentum remained firmly with the hosts.
Promoted in the batting order to counter England’s spin options, Dube played the role effectively. His 43 from 25 balls included a particularly aggressive passage against Adil Rashid, whom he struck for three towering sixes.
The attack also disrupted England’s bowling plans, limiting Liam Dawson to only one over.
Dube’s aggressive innings helped maintain India’s scoring rate and allowed the finishers to play with freedom. Tilak Varma then struck 21 from seven balls, while Hardik Pandya added two more sixes off Will Jacks in the final over to complete a quickfire 27 from 12.
Together, these moments ensured India edged a thrilling contest and progressed to the T20 World Cup final.
