Wasim Khan is set to step down from his role as the International Cricket Council’s general manager, bringing an end to a four-year tenure in the position.
He took over the role in May 2022, succeeding Geoff Allardice, who had moved into the CEO position at the ICC. Prior to joining the governing body, Wasim had spent nearly three years serving as the chief executive officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
From County Cricket to Administration
Before transitioning into administration, Wasim Khan had a notable playing career. He was the first British-born Muslim to feature in county cricket, representing Warwickshire during the mid-to-late 1990s.
A left-handed batter, he played 58 first-class matches and 30 List A games across stints with Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire. He was also part of Warwickshire’s County Championship-winning campaign in 1995, where he averaged close to 50 during the season.
Following his playing career, Wasim established himself in cricket administration. He held the role of CEO at Leicestershire and earlier worked with the Cricket Foundation, where he played a key role in developing Chance to Shine into a leading national cricket charity in the United Kingdom.
Key Developments During ICC Tenure
During his time at the ICC, Wasim navigated a period marked by increasing pressure on the global cricket calendar. The rapid growth of T20 and T10 leagues created scheduling challenges, often competing with international fixtures.
Despite these challenges, the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2023–27, finalised during his tenure, featured an increase in international cricket commitments. The period also saw the introduction of the first-ever women’s FTP, marking a significant step forward for the women’s game.
Departure Set for June
Wasim Khan will officially conclude his role at the end of June and is expected to move into a new position from July.
His exit comes amid a series of leadership changes within the ICC over the past two years. Geoff Allardice has been succeeded as CEO by Sanjog Gupta, while Chris Tetley and Alex Marshall have also departed their respective roles. Tetley has been replaced by Gaurav Saxena, and Marshall by Andrew Ephgrave.
