New Zealand assistant coaches Jacob Oram and Luke Ronchi are set to be unavailable for the national team’s upcoming assignments against South Africa and Bangladesh as they honour their coaching roles in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed that both former internationals, who previously represented the country as players, will miss the bilateral engagements later this month. The duo are contracted with PSL franchise Islamabad United, where Ronchi will take on head coach duties and Oram will serve as his assistant.

The PSL is scheduled to begin on March 26, coinciding with the latter stages of New Zealand’s five-match home series against South Africa.

“This is a great chance for Luke and Jake to further their coaching experience and grow their skills outside of the New Zealand cricket environment,” NZC Performance Manager Mike Sandle said in a statement.

“Just like our players, our coaches are in demand around the world and we believe Luke and Jake will not only personally benefit from their time at the PSL, but they will also be able to bring back knowledge and IP that can aid the BLACKCAPS and NZC in the future.”

In their absence, head coach Rob Walter will receive support from alternative members of the coaching group. Wellington Blaze coach Jonny Bassett-Graham and NZC network coach Graeme Aldridge will assist during the South Africa series, while Canterbury coach Brendan Donkers is set to join the support staff for the Bangladesh tour.

New Zealand are currently scheduled to host South Africa for five T20Is from March 15 to March 25. The side will then travel to Bangladesh in April for a limited-overs tour comprising three ODIs and three T20Is.
