Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has been fined a record PKR 20 million by the Pakistan Cricket Board following a controversial social media post involving Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The fine, estimated at around USD 72,000, is the highest ever imposed in Pakistan cricket and is equivalent to nearly eight months of his central contract earnings.

Maryam Nawaz was present at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday alongside other dignitaries, where she was introduced to officials from the eight franchises and players ahead of the opening match.

The Social Media Incident

The controversy began when a post appeared on Naseem’s X account reacting to Nawaz’s arrival at the venue, stating, “Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?” The message, which seemed to question the VIP arrangements for dignitaries while fans were not allowed to attend due to fuel conservation measures, was deleted shortly after being posted.

Naseem initially claimed that his account had been compromised and later stated that the post had been made by his management team, adding that “it does not reflect” his views. The PCB responded promptly by issuing a show-cause notice within 24 hours.

At the subsequent disciplinary hearing, the 21-year-old issued an unconditional apology and dismissed his social media manager, who has since been barred by the board from working with any Pakistan cricketers.

Context Behind the Controversy

The situation gained further sensitivity due to the broader circumstances surrounding the tournament. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier announced that matches in the Pakistan Super League would be played without spectators due to the country’s fuel crisis.

Despite this, several political figures, including Maryam Nawaz—daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and niece of current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—attended the opening match with extensive security arrangements.

PCB Reinforces Disciplinary Stance

The PCB stated that Naseem had breached “various clauses of his central contract” and reiterated its commitment to “upholding professional standards, contractual obligations and the integrity of the game.” The violation is understood to fall under clause 2.23 of the board’s code of conduct, which restricts public criticism of officials, policies, or sponsors.

This is not the first instance of disciplinary action over political expression. In the previous year, all-rounder Aamer Jamal was fined more than PKR 1 million for displaying “804” — the prisoner number of former Prime Minister Imran Khan — during a Test series. However, Naseem’s penalty is more than 16 times higher, marking a significant escalation.

Financial Impact

For Naseem Shah, who was the most expensive signing in the PSL this season at PKR 86.50 million for Rawalpindi Pindiz, the fine represents a major financial setback. Currently placed in the ‘C’ category of central contracts, the pacer is expected to cover the penalty largely from his league earnings.

The episode underscores the increasing scrutiny on players’ public conduct and highlights the fine balance between personal expression and professional responsibility in Pakistan cricket.
