Bangladesh appeared set to reconsider its stance on broadcasting IPL 2026, raising expectations that the tournament could return to local television. However, a fresh development has complicated the situation, leaving the broadcast outlook uncertain.

Mustafizur Rahman Decision Sparks Reaction

The controversy initially emerged after Mustafizur Rahman was left out of Kolkata Knight Riders’ squad ahead of IPL 2026. Reports indicated that the move followed directions from the BCCI.

The decision drew strong reactions in Bangladesh, particularly given the broader political and social tensions between the two countries at the time. It was widely perceived as a slight, prompting Bangladesh’s Information Ministry to impose a ban on IPL broadcasts.

Currently, Mustafizur Rahman is featuring for Lahore Qalandars in PSL 2026. He has played two matches so far, taking two wickets at an economy rate of 4.87. Across his PSL career, he has appeared in seven matches, claiming six wickets at an economy of 5.91.

Commercial Dispute Adds New Complication

While the Bangladesh government later signalled that it might revisit the broadcast ban, a commercial dispute has since emerged as the primary obstacle.

JioStar, which holds IPL broadcasting rights in the region, has terminated its agreement with Bangladesh-based TSports. The partnership had covered sublicensing rights for IPL seasons from 2023 to 2027.

“The agreement stands terminated with immediate effect,” a JioStar letter, accessed by Reuters, said to TSports.

According to reports, the termination followed repeated delays in payments by TSports, which JioStar cited as the key reason for ending the deal.

No Broadcast Path Despite Policy Shift

The termination of the agreement means that even if Bangladesh lifts its ban, IPL 2026 may still not be broadcast in the country due to the absence of an authorised rights holder.

Earlier, officials had suggested that any final decision would depend on discussions with the sports ministry. However, the commercial breakdown has made those considerations less relevant, as there is currently no broadcaster in place.

IPL 2026 Underway

IPL 2026 began on March 28, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad. Rajat Patidar’s side opened their campaign with a six-wicket win.

In the second match, Mumbai Indians defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.

The third fixture will see Rajasthan Royals take on Chennai Super Kings at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
