While the cricket world remains focused on the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, rising military tensions in Western Asia have begun affecting international sporting events. The ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 has now faced disruption due to the escalating conflict involving the United States and Iran.
Six matches scheduled to be played in Nepal have been postponed. Cricket Nepal confirmed the decision through a statement on social media, adding that revised dates for the fixtures will be announced later.
Rising Conflict Impacts Tournament Schedule
As the global cricket community followed the excitement of the T20 World Cup 2026, the rapidly escalating situation in Western Asia drew attention for different reasons. Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Hosseini Khamenei, tensions intensified and developed into a regional conflict involving the USA and Iran, with wider global implications.
The situation has also begun affecting sporting events. After football competitions experienced disruptions due to the crisis, cricket has now been impacted as well.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 ODI World Cup, had a series of matches scheduled in Nepal. Oman, UAE and Nepal were set to compete in six games between March 10 and March 20. However, the fixtures have now been postponed as a result of the rising tensions.
Cricket Nepal Confirms Postponement
With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, participating teams had been using the tournament as a key preparation phase. The postponement therefore represents a setback for the sides involved.
Cricket Nepal confirmed the decision in an official announcement on its social media platforms, stating that the matches will be rescheduled after further discussions.
“CWC League 2 Matches Postponed. In light of the current situation in the Middle East, the CWC League 2 matches scheduled to begin on March 10 in Kathmandu have been postponed until further notice. The affected fixtures include the matches involving Oman, UAE, and Nepal. The rescheduled dates will be announced in the coming days following further consultations,” Cricket Nepal wrote.
Other Cricket Events Also Affected
The ongoing geopolitical tensions have also disrupted other cricket series. The white-ball series between Pakistan Shaheens and England Lions was called off after the first two ODI matches had been completed.
Both teams had been preparing for the third match in Abu Dhabi when the cricket boards decided to cancel the remainder of the series due to security concerns.
The suspension of the League 2 matches could have wider implications for qualification for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. Through this pathway, four teams from the 14-team competition will secure their places in the global tournament, and the disruption may influence their qualification campaigns.
