Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a major setback ahead of the IPL 2026 season following Harshit Rana’s injury, which has disrupted the balance of their fast-bowling unit. The franchise had already parted ways with Mustafizur Rahman and subsequently brought in Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani as his replacement. Although Muzarabani adds height and pace to the attack, his IPL experience remains limited.

Rana suffered a ligament strain in his right knee during India’s T20 World Cup warm-up clash against South Africa in Navi Mumbai and later underwent surgery. With his rehabilitation still in progress and no clear timeline for his return, the three-time champions have begun assessing potential replacements.

As part of their preparations, several medium pacers have been invited to trials during the team’s pre-season camp at Eden Gardens. Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Sandeep Warrier and KM Asif were all spotted taking part in the sessions. Saini’s raw pace and ability to generate bounce make him a notable candidate, especially given the conditions expected at the Kolkata venue.

Madhwal has also strengthened his case after producing impactful performances for Mumbai Indians in past IPL campaigns. His composure in pressure situations, particularly in the death overs, along with his accuracy with yorkers, could prove valuable for the franchise.

Simarjeet Singh, who has previously featured in the squads of Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, has claimed 11 wickets in 14 IPL matches. His strong showing in the 2025 Delhi Premier League has further enhanced his prospects.

Kerala pacers Sandeep Warrier and KM Asif were also among those assessed. Warrier brings consistency and prior experience with KKR, while Asif offers pace and the ability to trouble batters with short-pitched deliveries.

Adding further interest to the selection process is left-arm seamer Sunil Kumar from Jammu & Kashmir. Having impressed in longer formats, he will aim to convert that form into an opportunity in the IPL environment.

Meanwhile, KKR have received encouraging news regarding Matheesha Pathirana’s fitness ahead of their home fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2. The Sri Lankan quick, acquired for ₹18 crore, is yet to obtain official clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket, but sources indicate he could be declared fit between March 25 and 27, just before the tournament begins.

The Shah Rukh Khan-owned side also retains multiple domestic seam options in its squad, including Akash Deep, Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi, providing additional depth as they gear up for the new season.
