Sophie Devine and Maddy Green produced a remarkable rescue act to script a record-breaking partnership for New Zealand Women in the second T20I against England at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.
After opting to bat first, New Zealand suffered an early collapse. Isabella Gaze was dismissed for 4, before Linsey Smith struck twice in quick succession, removing Georgia Plimmer and captain Amelia Kerr for golden ducks. At 5 for 3, the visitors were under severe pressure.
Devine, Green Lead Recovery
Facing a precarious situation, Devine and Green combined to stabilise the innings with a composed and determined partnership. Devine led the charge with 87 off 57 balls, hitting five fours and six sixes, while Green supported her with 56 from 48 deliveries.
The pair added 158 runs for the fifth wicket, setting a new record for the highest partnership by New Zealand Women against England in WT20Is. The stand surpassed the previous record of 101* set by Suzie Bates and Sara McGlashan in 2010.
It also became the second-highest fifth-wicket partnership in WT20Is and the fourth-highest for any wicket for New Zealand in the format.
Their effort lifted New Zealand to a competitive total of 170 for 5.
England Bowlers Impress
Despite the record stand, England’s bowlers had made a strong start. Linsey Smith was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 3 for 25 from four overs.
Lauren Bell picked up one wicket, while Issy Wong, Danielle Gibson and Freya Kemp kept the scoring in check without taking wickets.
England began their reply positively, with Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey putting together a 31-run opening stand. During the powerplay, the hosts scored 49 runs while losing just one wicket, maintaining early momentum in the chase.
With the series finely poised, England will look to capitalise on their start and push for a result. The ODI leg between the two sides had ended level after one match was abandoned, adding further importance to the T20I series outcome.
