Three directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board stepped down after a lengthy board meeting in Dhaka, adding to a growing list of resignations within the governing body.
Faiazur Rahman was the first to inform the board of his decision shortly after the meeting concluded, with Shanian Taneem and Mehrab Alam Chowdhury submitting their resignations soon after. Their departures bring the total number of directors to have stepped down since the most recent BCB elections to six in under six months.
The latest exits follow a series of earlier resignations. Ishtiaque Sadeque was the first to leave in January, citing personal reasons. Amzad Hossain stepped down last month, shortly after being removed as media chairman. Yasir Mohammed Faysal, a government-nominated director, resigned just days before the three additional departures.
Uncertainty surrounds reasons behind decisions
The exact reasons behind the latest resignations remain unclear. The meeting was chaired by BCB president Aminul Islam, with vice-president Faruque Ahmed, who is unwell, joining remotely.
Speaking after the meeting, newly appointed media chairman Mohammad Mokhsedul Kamal indicated that the board had not formally discussed the matter.
“We haven’t discussed this at the board. Those who resigned cited personal reasons for their decision,” Kamal said. “It is their personal decision. The one you are mentioning [Faiazur], he attended the meeting with us. We heard the news that he resigned after the meeting.”
Faiazur, who also served as vice-chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, had recently criticized the board’s handling of domestic leagues.
Growing concerns amid ongoing investigations
The number and timing of the resignations have raised concerns, particularly given the broader context surrounding the BCB. Directors are typically expected to serve full terms, making six resignations within a short period notable.
The situation is further complicated by a government investigation into the BCB elections held in October last year. A committee has been tasked with reviewing the process and is expected to submit its findings to the sports ministry in the coming days.
Additionally, sports minister Aminul Haque has indicated plans to investigate Bangladesh’s absence from the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, held in India and Sri Lanka. He has also referenced allegations of political favouritism within the board during a recent parliamentary session.
Uncertain road ahead for BCB
With multiple resignations and ongoing inquiries, the BCB faces a period of uncertainty. The departures of three directors on the same evening further highlight the challenges currently surrounding the board’s structure and governance.
