Eden Park’s reputation as a high-scoring venue did not hold true on Friday (March 20), as South Africa struggled to adapt to a tricky two-paced surface. After being restricted to 136/9, the hosts chased down the target comfortably to register an eight-wicket victory and move ahead 2-1 in the five-match T20I series.

Opting to bowl first, New Zealand made early inroads with Lockie Ferguson removing Wiaan Mulder for a four-ball duck. Connor Esterhuizen counterattacked with a six and two boundaries off Kyle Jamieson in the third over, but Mitchell Santner’s introduction quickly swung momentum in the hosts’ favour. The skipper induced a mistimed shot from Esterhuizen to claim his first wicket, with the surface offering grip and turn. Ben Sears then added to South Africa’s troubles by dismissing Tony de Zorzi in the final over of the Powerplay.

Santner continued to tighten the screws, removing Jason Smith for the third time in the series before Rubin Hermann dragged a delivery from Cole McConchie onto his stumps. Reduced to 46/5, South Africa found themselves in deep trouble. Dian Forrester briefly looked threatening before falling to a catch at point, while Gerald Coetzee and George Linde struck a few boundaries to push the total past 100. Jamieson’s clever change-ups, however, accounted for both in the same over.

South Africa seemed headed for a collapse, but Nqobani Mokoena offered late resistance. He struck three sixes, including one off the final ball of the innings, to remain unbeaten on 26 and guide his side to 136/9.

The chase began briskly as Devon Conway and Tom Latham capitalised on inconsistent bowling from the South African pacers. Several deliveries drifting onto the pads allowed the openers to score freely, highlighted by a 21-run over off Lutho Sipamla. Although Coetzee delivered a tight over towards the end of the Powerplay, it did little to stem New Zealand’s momentum.

Latham anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 63 off 55 balls, while Conway accelerated after a cautious start. Their 96-run partnership was broken in the 11th over when Keshav Maharaj dismissed Conway for 39. Tim Robinson then chipped in with a run-a-ball 17 before being trapped LBW with the scores level. Nick Kelly finished the chase with a single, as New Zealand reached 137/2 in 16.2 overs.

Ferguson, who conceded just nine runs in his four overs, was named Player of the Match. With back-to-back victories boosting their confidence, New Zealand will aim to seal the series in the fourth T20I in Wellington on Sunday. However, they will be without Ferguson, Conway and Santner for the contest, with Latham set to lead the side.

Brief Scores:
South Africa 136/9 in 20 overs (Nqobani Mokoena 26*; Mitchell Santner 2/21, Ben Sears 2/27, Lockie Ferguson 1/9) lost to New Zealand 137/2 in 16.2 overs (Tom Latham 63*, Devon Conway 39) by eight wickets.
