In a significant turn for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie has been officially appointed as the head coach of the newly established Hyderabad franchise for the 2026 season. This announcement marks a high-profile return for Gillespie to the Pakistani cricket landscape, following a tumultuous exit as the national team’s Test coach just months ago.

The expansion of the PSL to eight teams for its 11th edition has brought fresh excitement, with Hyderabad and Sialkot joining the roster. Gillespie’s appointment was confirmed by the franchise’s social media handle, Kingsmen Cricket, signaling a new era for the team as they prepare for their debut.

A Fresh Start After National Team Friction

Gillespie’s previous stint in Pakistan was marked by administrative tension. Appointed as the Test head coach in April 2024, his tenure ended abruptly in late 2024. The former cricketer publicly expressed his frustration over a “zero communication” policy from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding key decision-making, including the sudden removal of his authority in selecting high-performance staff.

Despite the “bitter” ending to his national assignment, Gillespie has chosen to return to the country’s domestic circuit. His experience guiding Yorkshire to consecutive County Championships and his long-standing role with the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League make him a massive acquisition for a team building from the ground up.

Building the Hyderabad Kingsmen

Hyderabad, owned by Fawad Sarwar of the FKS Group, enters the league after a winning bid of Rs 1.75 billion ($6.25 million). The franchise, likely to be officially named the Kingsmen Hyderabad, is currently working on its core identity before the season begins.

  • The New Auction Model: For the first time in PSL history, the traditional draft system has been scrapped in favor of a player auction, scheduled for February 11, 2026.
  • Squad Construction: As a new entrant, Hyderabad will have the opportunity to build their squad from scratch alongside Sialkot, competing for top-tier talent in an auction pool that now uses Pakistani currency for greater local transparency.
  • Infrastructure: The team will play its home matches at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad, which is expected to undergo upgrades to meet the league’s high standards.

PSL 2026: Historic Expansion

The 11th edition of the PSL is set to be its largest ever, running from March 26 to May 3, 2026. This window represents a slight shift to avoid clashing with the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in February and March.

With the addition of Hyderabad and Sialkot, the tournament format has evolved to accommodate 44 matches. For Gillespie, the mission is clear: translate his global franchise success into a winning debut for Sindh’s newest sporting representatives.
