In a massive blow to USA Cricket just days before the T20 World Cup 2026, star batter and former captain Aaron Jones has been provisionally suspended from all forms of cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, that Jones has been charged with five separate breaches of anti-corruption codes belonging to both the ICC and Cricket West Indies (CWI).

The charges primarily stem from an investigation into the 2023-24 Bim10 tournament in Barbados, though the ICC has confirmed that two of the charges specifically relate to international fixtures.

The Five Specific Charges

The anti-corruption investigation has focused on several key areas of misconduct, categorized under both regional and international codes:

Under the CWI Anti-Corruption Code (Bim10 Tournament):

  • Article 2.1.1: Fixing, contriving to fix, or otherwise improperly influencing the result, progress, or conduct of matches in the Bim10 tournament.
  • Article 2.4.2: Failing to disclose to Cricket West Indies full details of any approaches or invitations to engage in corrupt conduct.
  • Article 2.4.4: Failing or refusing to cooperate with a reasonable investigation carried out by the Designated Anti-Corruption Official.

Under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code (International Matches):

  • Article 2.4.4: Failing to disclose to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) full details of approaches or invitations to engage in corrupt conduct in international matches.
  • Article 2.4.7: Obstructing an ACU investigation by concealing or tampering with information that may have been relevant to the inquiry.

Impact on T20 World Cup 2026

The timing of the suspension is catastrophic for USA’s World Cup preparations. Jones, who was expected to serve as the team’s vice-captain, had been training with an 18-member squad in Sri Lanka ahead of the tournament’s February 7 start.

  • Ineligible for Selection: With the provisional suspension effective immediately, Jones is now barred from the USA squad.
  • Squad Deadline: USA Cricket has until January 31 to finalize their 15-member roster. The loss of their premier middle-order batter—famous for his match-winning heroics against Canada and Pakistan in the 2024 edition—leaves a significant void in the lineup.
  • Wider Investigation: The ICC has indicated that these charges are part of a broader probe, suggesting that “further charges against other participants” may follow in the coming weeks.

Career at a Glance

Aaron Jones, 31, has been the backbone of American cricket since his debut in 2019. Born in New York and raised in Barbados, he has featured in 100 international games (52 ODIs and 48 T20Is).

He recently enjoyed a stellar 2024, top-scoring in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final for the champion St Lucia Kings and leading the USA to their historic Super Eight finish in the 2024 T20 World Cup. His most recent competitive appearance was in the Abu Dhabi T10 league in November 2025.

Jones now has 14 days from January 28 to respond to the allegations.
